Method

How we scope, research and model a market

How we take a brief to a finished report, and the checks every figure passes.

Process

Four stages, in the same order every time

  1. Step 1

    Brief

We agree the market definition, the regions, the years and the question the work must answer.

  2. Step 2

    Research

Analysts collect data from agencies, filings, trade bodies and the industry, and check each figure.

  3. Step 3

    Model

We size the market top down and bottom up, reconcile the two, and build a five-year outlook.

  4. Step 4

    Deliver

A final review for units, years and scope, then the report, workbook and model go to you.

Sizing

Top down and bottom up

Top-down

Start from total spend in the sector and narrow it to the part this market can address.

Total sector spend
Addressable share

Bottom-up

Count buyers or installed units, then apply adoption, usage and price per unit.

One market estimateWe reconcile both views into a single range and explain any gap between them in the report.

The standard in one paragraph

A figure is published when it has a value, a unit, a year, and a source we have read. A report goes out when the brief is answered and every figure has passed review.

Where the data comes from

Tier 1
Statistical agencies and regulators: national and EU statistics offices, energy and transport authorities, central banks, and securities regulators.
Tier 2
Company filings and releases: annual reports, 10-K and 20-F filings, regulatory submissions, and investor presentations.
Tier 3
Standards bodies, trade associations, and peer-reviewed research, used where Tier 1 and Tier 2 have no figure.

What we record for every figure

  • Statement, written as one claim
  • Value and unit
  • Year the value refers to
  • Publisher, title, URL, and publication date of the source
  • The quoted line the value comes from

How we size a market

We build the size two ways where the data allows. The top-down view starts from an official total, such as sector revenue or shipments, and narrows to the market. The bottom-up view starts from units and prices. When the two agree, we say so. When they do not, we show the gap and explain which input we trust more.

How we handle estimates

An estimate is labelled as an estimate, with the inputs and the year it applies to. A forecast is labelled as a forecast, and it lists the drivers it depends on. We do not turn a forecast into a figure in the key figures list.

Checking and dates

Every figure is checked before a page is published. The date of the last update is printed on the page. If an input changes, the figure is re-read and the date moves with it.

Corrections

Write to info@stratummarketresearch.com with the page and the figure. We reply within two working days. If you are right, we correct the page and say what changed.

What the editions add

The page is free and shows the key figures. The Data pack gives you the workbook with every figure and a chart pack. The Full report adds the written analysis, the sizing model, the outlook, and the company profiles. The Team licence extends the licence to ten people and adds a walkthrough with the analyst.
